It all started as a job at a local Tyre garage for me. I never intended to open my own business as it was simply a job, for me to get some weekend money at the age of 18. I went into this job knowing absolutely nothing about the Tyre business, but it didn’t take me long to pick up particular skills and start to learn the trade. It also didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the job, meeting customers and working in a garage.
I was there for around 18 months, when I started to think about making it a full time career. It was then that I started looking into opening my own Tyre business. It didn’t take long for me to find a local garage. My Grandad who has been in the motor trade for over 25 years, had a garage in Spencer street, Gravesend. This was only used to store tools ready for me.
When you get your Tyres from Luke’s Tyres, you’ll always leave our premises feeling much better, than when you got here. We always provide value for money, reliability and a quality service. We provide Part Worn Tyres In Gravesend.
Luke’s Tyres Kent’s Largest Supplier
After some meetings and cleaning of the new garage we were all set. I found a Tyre supplier in Dagenham where I bought my first 200 Tyres. I put them in my wooden shelving racks my dad had built for me. At that point we were trading as Luke’s Tyres and were officially established in 2010.
The business started slow as expected, but as time went on it picked up bit. Soon we started getting our regular customers but, I was still using a wholesale firm in Dagenham. I was driving over there one evening every week to continually keep my stock, topped up with the Tyres we were selling with regularity.
Before we knew it we were selling more and more, we needed more stock. We took on a container at first to store our extra Tyres, we had this container for around 6 months. Another one of my Grandad’s garages became available to which we decided to take it over, as we needed more room to store our Tyres.
I started looking at getting Part Worn Tyres from Europe, Germany and Holland. We were buying them in bulk and eventually looked towards a huge saving. I found a good contact in Germany which is the same supplier we are still using today. I drove out there and had a meeting, looked at the quality product they had to offer, and bought my first lorry load of 1500 Tyres.
We have the task of unloading them off the lorry this side which isn’t easy. For this amount of Tyres we had to take on a warehouse down the canal, which is the one we are trading out of today. Business had really picked up and we were selling a lot of part worn Tyres locally. We had our regulars and we would see a lot of taxis and learner drivers every day.
Whilst my Dad has completed all the necessary paperwork and maintenance, he has also learned how to change Tyres himself. We have employed my younger brother Jordan full time, so now we’ve become an established family run business. Collectively everyone is playing important roles within the company.
We have expanded our business every year. We have struggled to meet the demands of local people in our small garage, as we were having to work outside in the road. We required a larger working area and decided last year that we needed to move to a bigger premises, in order to cope with the influx of regular custom.
Luke’s Tyres Business Premises
We’ve been actively using social media to enable our customers to know, we were going to move into our new premises in March 2019. My dad has provided and designed a great little waiting area, complete with chairs, a Tv and a drinks machine. This is all whilst myself and Jordan, have carried on working in Spencer St.
In our new premises, we have more Tyre machines and more parking bays, in order to reduce the waiting times of our customers. Now we’re at the Canal Basin, Albion Parade our new home for the business. Our regular deliveries from Germany has allowed us to provide a greater selection of quality Tyres for our customers. We will continue to offer fair prices to the local community, whilst making sure we are cheaper than all our rivals.
